They also said she suffered significant injuries to both arms during the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The failed execution came after a dramatic legal battle earlier that same day, when a federal appeals court temporarily stopped the execution before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that stay and allowed Tennessee to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&#038;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1096942159981044%2F&#038;show_text=false&#038;width=267&#038;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE EXECUTION WAS ALMOST STOPPED<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pike&#8217;s execution had been scheduled for September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly before the scheduled execution, the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay while it considered new arguments from Pike&#8217;s attorneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her lawyers had raised issues involving her childhood abuse, trauma and other mitigating evidence that they said deserved greater consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee officials appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court ultimately vacated the appeals court&#8217;s stay, allowing Tennessee to proceed with the execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented from that decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE THE EXECUTION CHAMBER?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The execution eventually began Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to media witnesses and court filings, Pike was strapped to a gurney and the execution process began with pentobarbital, Tennessee&#8217;s single-drug lethal-injection protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pike remained conscious during part of the procedure and at one point reportedly asked prison officials whether the sensation in her arm was supposed to feel that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, witnesses reported hearing her breathing and loudly snoring even after a second dose had been administered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second dose was reported to have been given around 8:26 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By approximately 8:53 p.m., witnesses were ordered to leave the area while Pike could still reportedly be heard breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PIKE WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The execution was ultimately halted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pike was transported by ambulance to an outside medical facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, Tennessee officials provided few details about her condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her attorneys later reported that she was in critical condition and receiving intensive medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 2, her attorneys said Pike was unconscious and on a ventilator. They also said she had significant injuries to both arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WHAT WENT WRONG?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee officials have not yet released a complete explanation about what caused the execution to fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Pike&#8217;s attorneys have alleged that problems with the intravenous lines caused the pentobarbital to enter tissue rather than properly entering her bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a court filing, her attorneys said her arms were swollen, burned and blistered and argued that the execution team failed to recognize problems with the IV lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those claims are allegations from Pike&#8217;s legal team and remain subject to investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee&#8217;s Department of Correction has said that officials followed the state&#8217;s established execution protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state has now ordered a third-party investigation into what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TENNESSEE PAUSES REMAINING EXECUTIONS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The failed execution immediately triggered a broader response from Tennessee officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov.
